  3. INTRODUCTION
  4.  
  5. PDFM stands for the PCBoard Deluxe File Manager.  This file manager is
  6. similar in function to the PCBFiler program distributed with PCBoard.
  7. I have written PDFM as an alternative to PCBFiler.
  8.  
  9. This version of PDFM is a preview version.  Basically, it is a
  10. stand-alone demonstration version that includes its own mini-BBS.
  11. The preview operates similarly to what I expect the finished version
  12. to operate.  Please read the rest of this file and the various
  13. documentation to see its limitations.

  15. When the shareware version of PDFM is available, you may use it for 30
  16. days, at which time you are expected to register your copy.  The
  17. shareware version will be fully functional and will only have
  18. registration reminders upon exiting the program.  I have set the
  19. registration fee at $30 and feel that the program is more than worth
  20. that amount for the time you will save using it.

  23. INSTALLING THE PREVIEW

  25. The PDFMPREV.ZIP file consists of three files--this file, an
  26. INSTALL.BAT and another ZIP file that the install program uses to
  27. extract the files.  When you run the install batch file, it will
  28. create a directory named \PDFM on your current drive and will then
  29. unzip the rest of the files into this subdirectory.  It will then give
  30. you any addition instructions that you need.

  33. DISTRIBUTION

  35. You may freely distribute the preview to any other PCBoard sysops who
  36. you feel may be interested.  Please feel free to post this to other
  37. BBS's that you think would be a good distribution point.  It has
  38. already been posted to the Clark Development BBS, so please try not to
  39. repost it there.

  41. Please, when re-distributing, do not modify any of the files.
  42. Distribute only the PDFMPREV.ZIP and not the PREVIEW.ZIP file included
  43. with the PDFMPREV.ZIP.

  46. DISCLAIMER
  47.  
  48. Remember, this is a preview of PDFM, and as such it does not
  49. incorporate support for actual use with your BBS.  It does include
  50. a small "sample" BBS which you may manage just like you do your own.
  51. You may add file areas, delete the files, add more files, etc.
  52. Realize that although it is a preview, its functions are real, NOT
  53. SIMULATED.  If you delete a file, it is gone.  Please read the section
  54. below on the previews limitations.

  56. Please realize that this is a PREVIEW and not a BETA test.  Beta
  57. testing has not taken place yet (as of 9/16/92) so there may be bugs
  58. and incompatibilities that may cause PDFM to either not work or work
  59. incorrectly.  I have spent a lot of my own time ensuring that the
  60. preview has as few bugs as possible, but I cannot guarantee the same
  61. level of performance on your system.

  63. Please do not send feedback on the preview version of PDFM (ver 0.0a)
  64. after 10/30/92.  By this time, I hope to have all the minor bugs
  65. fixed and any changes to the user-interface completed.  If you are
  66. interested in obtaining a more current copy of PDFM or its preview,
  67. please contact me at one of the addresses given at the end of this
  68. file or in the preview documentation.

  70. Of course, because the preview is NOT INTENDED for actual use with
  71. your BBS but rather as a stand-alone demo, I cannot be responsible for
  72. its misuse as a completed program or any consequences of such use.

  75. LIMITATIONS
  76.  
  77. The preview has several limitations that I feel must be mentioned.
  78. Although a lot of the code is exactly what will be distributed with
  79. the shareware release, several sections have not been fully
  80. implemented.  The following list gives the major limitations of the
  81. preview.
  82.  
  83. 1)  500 files per area MAX!  I didn't want to introduce new bugs by
  84.     changing this to the 2000 files per area that the shareware
  85.     version will have.  Please do not try to load 2000 files into a
  86.     single area.  I guarantee that PDFM will either complain or crash.
  87.  
  88. 2)  The preview does not generate the DIR, DIR.LST, DLPATH, or any
  89.     DIRxx files that PCBoard uses.  Although the preview
  90.     contains some of the code needed to do this, I did not want
  91.     the preview to have these capabilities in order to protect the
  92.     integrity of your BBS and ensure such use of the preview is not
  93.     possible.
